Without a doubt, the Union Trust Company clock is the most famous and enduring business advertisement downtown Ellsworth has ever known. The famous electric clock was installed in 1929, just before the start of the Great Depression. Its three faces are 30 inches across, and the entire clock enclosure is more than 12 feet tall. It contains a complete set of Westminster chimes. At some point in the late 1950s, a man named Henry Mutannen Lovell fired a shot at the clock from a second-floor window on State Street, hitting one of its faces and destroying the glass cover. The Union Trust clock had Roman numerals prior to the shooting incident; after the clock was repaired, the numbers were Arabic.

Why donate to the Heart of Ellsworth?
Heart of Ellsworth remains focused and committed to economic growth through projects in the urban core.

Our vision seeks to fill storefronts on Main Street, secure a location for the Winter Farmers Market, develop the Union River waterfront with green space along the river, and identify and assist in the creation of more downtown housing options. Collectively, these enhance opportunities for both visitors and community members to enjoy all that Ellsworth has to offer.
Your contribution ensures that we can remain committed to these goals.
