Heart of Ellsworth Welcomes Sonya Bates as Creative Space Coordinator

Heart of Ellsworth is excited to welcome Sonya Bates as the new Creative Space Coordinator for the Makerspace at 16 State Street.

This new role is an important step forward for 16 State as the space continues to grow into a welcoming hub for creativity, community connection, workshops, gallery exhibitions, events, and rentals. As Creative Space Coordinator, Sonya will serve as the on-site lead, helping coordinate programming and support the artists, entrepreneurs, and community members who bring the space to life.

Sonya brings a thoughtful mix of small business, hospitality, and community programming experience to the role. She holds a degree in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic, previously owned the Flour Shop Bakery in Surry, and served as baking manager at Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro in downtown Ellsworth. More recently, her nonprofit work with Healthy Peninsula and as a Dementia Inclusive Fellow with the University of Maine has centered on creating welcoming, inclusive community spaces.

“I’m excited to work with Heart of Ellsworth! It’s a pleasure to join a team that’s committed to building community through art and creativity,” said Bates. “I look forward to supporting artists, fostering connections, and welcoming the community to the Makerspace.”

The Makerspace at 16 State Street is a program of Heart of Ellsworth created to support downtown vitality, small business growth, creative entrepreneurship, and hands-on opportunities for learning and collaboration. With Sonya stepping into this role, 16 State is ready for its next chapter, one built around connection, creativity, and a wide-open door.

Stay tuned for upcoming workshops, gallery events, rentals, and more at 16 State.
