Downtown Ellsworth Earns National Register of Historic Places Designation
We are proud to share that Downtown Ellsworth has officially been designated on the National Register of Historic Places, marking an exciting milestone in our community’s ongoing preservation efforts. The designation recognizes the historic and architectural significance of downtown, including 38 contributing buildings that reflect Ellsworth’s development as a commercial and cultural center.
This achievement follows a multi year, community driven process led by Heart of Ellsworth and supported by local partners, preservation experts, and community members. After state approval in February 2026, the nomination advanced for federal review and received final designation.
The National Register designation is non regulatory, but it creates meaningful opportunities for eligible property owners through access to historic tax credits and encourages investment that helps preserve the character of downtown.
This designation honors Ellsworth’s past while helping position downtown for future investment and revitalization. It also builds on the momentum of Ellsworth’s designation as a Main Street America Community and reflects a shared commitment to preserving what makes our downtown special.
