Maine Seaweed Week Made a Splash in Downtown Ellsworth
Downtown Ellsworth got a little brinier this spring as Maine Seaweed Week made its way through shops, restaurants, the library, 16 State Street, and beyond.
From seaweed inspired menu specials to book displays, tiny art, film, snacks, and a downtown stroll, the week invited people to experience one of Maine’s coastal resources in creative, approachable ways. Around town, local businesses and organizations put their own spin on the celebration. There were seaweed snacks, seaweed books, seaweed beauty products, seaweed art, and yes, more than a few delicious reasons to say, “I’ll try that.”
One of the week’s highlights was the Voices of Frenchman Bay: Seaweed Social at 16 State Street, hosted with Frenchman Bay Conservancy and Maine Coast Sea Vegetables. Neighbors, partners, and curious community members gathered for small bites, conversation, and the premiere of the newest Voices of Frenchman Bay video, highlighting the connection between conservation and seaweed harvesting in Downeast Maine.
The week also brought people out into the community through the Maine Coast Sea Vegetables Open House, the Ellsworth Public Library’s Tiny Art Show kickoff, and a seaweed centered Jane’s Walk through downtown. Each event offered a different way to learn, taste, explore, and connect.
What made Maine Seaweed Week special was not just the seaweed, though it certainly carried its weight. It was the collaboration. Local businesses, nonprofits, producers, artists, readers, walkers, and snack enthusiasts all helped bring the celebration to life.
Thank you to Maine Coast Sea Vegetables, Frenchman Bay Conservancy, the Ellsworth Public Library, participating downtown businesses, and everyone who showed up with curiosity.
Maine Seaweed Week reminded us that downtown is at its best when people are making things together, trying something new, and finding joy in community!
